The following are general guidelines for managing your diabetes. They are not meant to replace advice and individualized care from your doctor or diabetes care team.
  • Visit your doctor and diabetes team at least 4 times per year.
  • Check your blood glucose/sugar level frequently.
  • Choose healthy foods and follow the meal plan developed by you and your dietitian.
  • Make physical activity a regular part of your day.
  • Take your medications as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Inspect your feet daily and have them assessed once per year by a health care professional.
  • Choose healthy ways to manage stress.
  • Have your eyes tested every 1 to 2 years by an eye specialist who can perform a dilated eye exam.
  • Visit your dentist yearly.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Use alcohol in moderation.
